Our topic for this week is education and the educational inequalities that are often found across our urban areas. As I explain in lecture notes, there are “achievement gaps” in our society along socio-economic and racial/ethnic lines. Children from higher social class and more affluent families tend to do better in school, as do White (and Asian) children, compared to Blacks and Hispanics. Some of this discrepancy results from school inequalities that exist in our urban areas. Because of the socio-economic and racial/ethnic segregation that exists in our urban areas, especially between central cities and more affluent suburbs, our urban schools also become divided along these lines. In addition, our system of local school districts where schools are funded to a significant extent from local property taxes means that suburban schools with more advantaged students also tend to receive more funding per pupil than central city schools which have higher percentages of disadvantaged students. These factors contribute to the different performance of different groups in our society.
