Re-read Hardy’s poem, “The Ruined Maid” (Textbook 59-60).

For this Discussion post, discuss all of the following:

 Diction – Comment on the diction of the two women in the poem. Which type of diction is used – colloquial, vulgate, informal, formal, etc.? (Reread the textbook section about diction, if you need to refresh on this!) What does their diction suggest about their social status and character? What kind of “feeling” to the poem does the diction help to establish?

 Denotation/connotation – Consider the denotation and connotation of the word “ruined”

– what does this word mean to the country woman? What does it mean to the city woman?

 Ruined…? Who is really the “ruined” maid here – and in what sense?

(Use specific examples from the poem to support your discussion.)
