A 85 year old femal was attended to the accident and emergency department who suffered from chest infection , confusion, oxygen demand and HAP. She was referred to the radiology department for chest x-ry to exclude the infection.

 

When I received the request I checked her clinical history then me and the radiographer decided that it was justified. Before I attended to do the chest X-ray for her I ensured that the X-ray room was clean and tidy then I prepared the equipment, x-ray cassette and exposure factors. Then, I brought the patient in to the X-ray room and I checked her id, date of birth and her address.The radiographer was assisting me during this procedure.

The patient was unable to bear weight ,deaf and wearing hearing aid and she was brought on a wheelchair .When I asked the patient to stand to do her chest X-ray she was confused and unstable. Therfore, the first thing comes into my mind that I have to do a Anterior Posterior view rather than Posterior Anterior. So,I inform the radiographer that regarding the patient condition I will X-ray her in her chair and he supported my desicion.

 

One of the problems that I was facing when I started to explain the whole procedure to the patient, I noticed that she was not following my instructions. Therefore, I had to make sure that she understands my instruction because it was clear and loud as much as I could. The other issue that makes me feel anxious is the disfunction of the X-ray tube. When I tried to move the x-ray tube into the AP projection it was stuck. So, I had to ask the help from the radiographer to assist me.

When I give her the birthing instruction I was watching her chest movement in case she was not lessening. After the exposure was made I asks her to relax then I took her in to the waiting erea. I also arrange porter to bring her back to the accident and emergency department. Finally, I checked the image with the radiographer and I ensured that it on the BACS system.

 

The steps that I have taken with the patient inspired the radiographer. I had to use this way with the patient so that she can cooperate with me.The results were accepted, and my assessment was significantly above expectations. During the assessment, I was under a lot of tension. However, once it was over, I was happy.

What was I trying to achieve and what are the consequences?

I was aiming to get the best chest x-ray for the patient with less harm to her. As also I was hoping that I can improve my skills when performing this procedure. In addition to that, I want to increase my knowledge when dealing with elderly patients who usually suffer from chronic diseases. Also, to improve my acquired experiences .(add some sentences here please )

 

 

 

How feel about this experience ‫؟‬

When I first saw the patient I was frustrated about her condition. However, she was cooperative with me and she tried to follow my instructions. I also felt annoyed because the X-ray tube was stuck , this cause my self- steam to drop a little. However, the support that I received from the radiographer just push me toward working hard.
