As you look ahead to Essay 3, remember that you are not arguing in isolation. You must address valid opposing viewpoints. If your argumentative topic does not solicit valid opposing viewpoints, then you should question whether or not your thesis is adequately arguable, or open to debate. Begin with an arguable claim because your academic audience will question the relevance of your argument if the topic isn’t open to debate. If most or all of your readers are likely to agree with you, why argue the point?

Remember that a good thesis, like good writing in general, improves over time. Follow the advice of the professional writers and allow your thesis statement to evolve as your thinking evolves. Even if you begin with a focused claim, you may need to rework your initial thesis as your understanding of your topic deepens.

Use this journal writing to explore the possible organization of your argumentative essay. Of course, in your working draft, you will develop an introduction, and, following your refutation of the counterargument, a conclusion. This skeleton view of your argument should give your instructor enough information to ascertain whether you are on the right track for a sound and reasonable argumentative essay.
