Question 1

As you prepare to write this discussion, take a few moments to do the following:

  • Review the Modeled Discussion.
  • Read any required and recommended reading materials for this week, especially Chapters 3 and 10 in your text.
  • Review the grading rubric for this discussion.

Then, watch the following movie clips, paying special attention to the cinematic elements under the discussion.

Editing – visual transitions between shots that work to move the story forward

Cinematography – camera angles, types of shots, framing, and color all working to set a particular mood

Lighting – light and shadow used to affect the mood, the way we view characters, and set the overall tone of the film

Analyze each of these aesthetic choices by following the instructions below. Your initial post should be at least 200 words in length. Support your claims with examples from the required material(s) and/or other scholarly sources, and properly cite any references.

  • Choose one of the clips from the “Editing” section and analyze the use of editing in one short paragraph. In your analysis, describe the transitions between specific shots and the overall effect this has on the scene.

The clip that I am selecting for the editing section is The Shower – Psycho (5/12) Movie Clip (1960) HD. While watching this clip it was pretty good in the transitions between scenes given the age of the film. While it is unfair to compare the film to one that is more modern, the transitions between shots is pretty basic. How ever towards the end of the clip when the actress fell out of the shower on to the floor it was a really good transition. I believe that is the best one from that entire clip.

The clip that I selected for the Cinematography section was The Long Take: Goodfellas. This 1990 film was extraordinary with its usage of different camera angles. I was very impressed with how the camera throughout the clip was up close and personal with the characters while transitioning through various scenes. This was a very clever way to keep viewers engaged while in a transition phase.

The clip that I chose for the lighting portion of the discussion was Jurassic Park (10/10) Movie Clip – Raptors in the Kitchen (1993) HD. While watching this film I noticed that it was for the majority a darker scene. However, lighting placed in specific areas in the setting set the perfect mood for this scene. It was a adrenaline rush to see the shadows of the dinosaurs creeping around corners barely missing the person that was hiding. Small things like the shadows is a result of perfectly placed lighting.

Editing – visual transitions between shots that work to move the story forward

For the editing portion of this discussion I chose to use The Shower – Psycho (5/12) Movie Clip (1960) HD. This scene uses an incredible amount of jump cuts as sliding closer to the drain as blood and life flow down it and then jumps to a shot of a slow zoom out while rotating slowly. The rotating shot was created for this movie and effect in particular. All of these shots and ideas of the editor in this movie led to one of the biggest mind tricks in film history if asked most viewers will tell you they witnessed a brutal and gore murder while in reality you never see blood on her and you never see her get stabbed.

Cinematography – camera angles, types of shots, framing, and color all working to set a particular mood

For the cinematography portion I have chosen The Long Take: Goodfellas. There are a lont of long shots used in this scene including the Master shot which is focused on showing they are going through a kitchen they also chose tight framing and middle shots so that you could see when he handed out $20’s but not closeups which would have made it seem overly important. Another thing that’s not to readily apparent but is noticeable is the color of the coats on the men “mob type creepers” in black, shady club person dark blue/red, innocent busboy working for uncle whoever in white.

Lighting – light and shadow used to affect the mood, the way we view characters, and set the overall tone of the film. I chose Jurassic Park (10/10) Movie Clip – Raptors in the Kitchen (1993) HD for lighting. The lighting in the kitchen was low and about 90% of the time the raptors were back-lit making them seem scary and creepy. There was also of worth to note a large bright light in the freezer which acted like a beacon of safety and salvation.

Identify the title, writer, director, major actors, and the year.

Title: The godfather opening scene

Writers: Mario Puzo and Frances Ford Coppola

Director: Francis Ford Coppola and Fred Gallo

Major actors: Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan, Richard Castellano, Robert Duvall

Year: 1972

Summarize the story and plot of your chosen movie

During a wedding reception for his daughter, Connie, and his new son-in-law, Carlo Rizzio, Don Vito Corleone, a Mafia boss known as the Godfather, conducts business in his office. With him are his oldest son, Sonny, and his adopted son and family lawyer, Tom Hagen. Several people come to Vito’s office to make requests, including Bonasera, an undertaker seeking revenge for a crime against his daughter, and Johnny Fontane, a Frank Sinatra-like singer and actor who wants Vito to help land him a part in a movie. As the wedding reception draws to a close, Vito dispatches Tom to Los Angeles to talk to Jack Waltz, the studio owner. Despite Tom’s prodding, Waltz refuses to give Fontane the part, so the Corleones make Woltz “an offer he can’t refuse.” The day after the meeting with Tom, Woltz wakes up in a blood-stained bed to discover the severed head of his prized horse under the covers at his feet.

Back in New York, a gangster named Sollozzo wants to involve the Corleone family in his narcotics smuggling operation. Two other crime families, the Barzinis and Tattaglias, are already in on the scheme, but Sollozzo wants Vito’s protection and financing too. Vito arranges a meeting with Sollozzo. Sonny and Tom support the idea of expanding the family business, but Vito cannot overcome his initial skepticism about the scheme and his distaste for drug trafficking. Vito rejects the offer and orders his bodyguard, Luca Brasi, to investigate Sollozzo. Luca is murdered, and shortly afterward a hit man attempts to assassinate Vito while he shops at a fruit market. Vito survives the shooting but is badly hurt, and Sonny temporarily takes control of the family business.

How did this aesthetic choice contribute to the general effect on the audience?

The film was presented chronically, but there are parts that was presented non-linearly. The movie being presented this way allowed for the viewer to go back to those events, understanding how and why it led up to the following event. It helps to keep up with the film.

How are elements like character development or foreshadowing impacted by the choice of storytelling methods?

Foreshadowing impacted the story telling of this movie during each part of the story leaves the viewer waiting and wanting to know what’s next.

If the film had followed a different presentation style, how would the general effect on the audience have been different?

It wouldn’t be as exciting, or suspense filled which is what makes this movie as good as it is. Instead it would be boring

The movie I decided to talk about was simple Rocky, I am a sports fan and that being on the list and my favorite franchise how can I not talk about it.

Identify the title, writer, director, major actors, and the year.

Title- Rocky

Writer-Sylvester Stallone (him not selling out the story is a great story in its own)

Director- John Avildsen

Major Actors- Sylvester Stallone, Carl Weathers, Burgess Meredith

Year- 1977

Summarize the story and plot of your chosen movie

Rocky is a no name boxer training in a beat-up gym working as a debt collector for a loan shark in Philadelphia. Heavyweight champion Apollo Creed comes to philly and offers an exhibition match between Creed and any boxer, selling it as a chance for a “nobody” to become a “somebody”. It appears as an easy match for Creed even though Rocky is the home town no name fighter but everyone underestimates the Italian Stallion’s Heart.

How did this aesthetic choice contribute to the general effect on the audience?

Rocky was done chronically. Being the first of the franchise and it not really going to much into Rocky’s past as a child there wasn’t much of a chance to got back and forth with the story. I don’t think they needed to either though. There is plenty of story to tell with the build up to Creed fight and his relationship with Mickey, Adrain, and Paulie. Rocky one was different in the sense that most people didn’t really know Rocky and he wasn’t the most exciting guy unless he was fighting or training so in the story, I think those were the scenes that they really used to hook the audience. Creed was a loud flashy guy and that made it easy in the movie to pay attention to him but in the first rocky it was the music, the training, and fight scene that really sold it. And I think that method stands true still in the franchise even though there is a lot more story to follow now simply because we have bought in and want to follow the characters now that we know them.

If the film had followed a different presentation style, how would the general effect on the audience have been different?

Good question! I am not too sure you could have told it any other way and still made it as interesting. As I said above, I don’t think Rocky was that interesting of a guy in the 1st movie so it was tough to watch him in a way. It was the other parts of the movie that sold him. I guess you could have flashed back to show how he got into boxing, but I don’t think you needed that.
