Then, have a conversation (or several) with people in your life that you respect. Find out what they think about this issue/argument/idea/text. Ask you pastor, another professor, your siblings, your cousins, your grandparents, or your favorite grocery store clerk – anyone whom you respect!

· Remember what they say. Be respectful and inquisitive.

· Ask them how they came to believe what they do. Did they come to this conclusion from living their life? From education? Was it passed down to them from someone they respect?

Finally, write about this conversation. In at least 1,250 words,

· Explain in your own words the issue/argument in the text.

· Explain who you picked to converse with and why.

· Explain and examine the response(s) you received. Do you agree? Why or why not?

· What surprised you about response(s) you heard? What didn’t surprise you? Why?

· What is you view on this issue/argument? Why do you believe this?

A few things to keep in mind:

· Note clearly what text you are responding to but you need not include a Works Cited page.

· Consider possible objections to your position and address them. Not considering such objections amounts to not thinking through your own position.

· When explaining your position, remember that you have to explain why you think the position is justified. Having a view is not very interesting; why you have a view and think it is justified is

· When you are done writing, read over your own paper critically. Was your view consistent? Did you make your points clearly?

· Include a word count at the end of your write-up.

· The paper will be evaluated on how well you explain your conversation, recap the exposition you offered of the issue/argument, and your engagement with the ideas discovered therein.

·

· Comments: remember to develop an argument for your opinion, and to engage with objections to your argument. If you cannot think of objections to your argument, then your opinion is likely a fact or it’s poorly thought-through. Either way, your paper and your argument suffer with the absence of carefully considered objections (and your responses to them). Be clear and succinct.
