Carefully read Matthew 5:1-20 and Luke 4:16-30. Consider the following questions: What themes or ideas do these passages have in common in the way they present Jesus? How do these passages represent the distinctive characteristics of Matthew and Luke which we discussed in class? How do these passages relate to the synoptic problem? Compose an essay of 600-800 words in which you articulate your understanding of how these passages represent the message of Jesus as it is presented in the gospels. A successful essay will (1) provide an interpretation of each passage, (2) describe how each passage represents the distinctive characteristics of the gospel in which they are found, (3) explain the significance of the synoptic problem for understanding the composition of these passages, and (4) summarize how these passages represent the teaching and ministry of Jesus. Finally, in your concluding reflections, choose one of the contemporary topics we have discussed this semester (Science, Immigration, Social Justice, Pop Culture, Sexuality, or Racism) and (5) offer a well-reasoned and informed opinion about how the presentation of Jesus in these passages might have relevance for the one topic you have chosen. Please use subtopics for each prompt.
