Now, let′s think of ″One Day at a Time″ Think back through the two episodes (6 & 7) of One Day at a Time we watched in this module. There are several examples of marginalization affecting several different characters. In a discussion post of no more than 200 words respond to the following prompts: Briefly describe the situation: What exactly is the problem or situation in which one or more characters are marginalized? How are they marginalized? Identify the players and stakeholders: Who has privilege in this situation (even if they don′t appear in the episode)? Who’s marginalized? What are the effects of those positions? In what ways does intersectionality deepen our view of this situation — that is, is the marginalization just because of one identity like sex or is it a combination of identities like sex, race, and class? (Think back to our readings on intersectionality. Remember the Goodyear case?) Choose one of the players or stake-holders and describe that character′s positionality in this situation. Remember ″positionality″ doesn′t mean ″opinion.″ Positionality means how that character is ″positioned″ with regard to the issue — powerless, able to affect change? Which of the character′s identities (gender, sex, race, class, age, etc) is or is not relevant? How is this problem currently being addressed/solved in the show? Is the way it′s addressed/solved realistic? For example, if an economic problem is solved by winning the lottery, that′s not very realistic. What approach or strategies would you suggest to the problem or issue presented? See the rubric for more guidance and for info on how each section is weighted in your grade for this assignment. Rubric #GEA1_MARG #GEA1_MARG Criteria Ratings Pts This criterion is linked to a Learning Outcome Desсrіption of Situation Briefly describe the situation (i.e., what exactly is the problem?) 3.0 pts Full Marks Not only provides details but demonstrates that you actually looked into, investigated, or thought deeply about the problem or situation 2.7 pts Detailed Provides more than general details but still doesn′t show evidence of ″digging in″ to the situation or connecting it to class deeply 2.4 pts As expected Gives the basics that one might expect from anyone off the street 2.1 pts Less than expected Describes situation somewhat fully but with imprecision or with reliance on general statements 0.0 pts No Marks Included only the bare minimum, leaving many questions or facts out; didn′t include this element at all; or actually included incorrect information 3.0 pts This criterion is linked to a Learning Outcome Identification of Players & Positionality Who has privilege in this situation? Who’s marginalized? What are the effects of those positions? In what ways does intersectionality deepen our view of this situation? What’s one character′s positionality in this situation? 2.0 pts Superior Considers not only self and obvious privileged/marginalized people but also unexpected parties; goes beyond single-identity to consider how those who hold privilege or are marginalized might navigate their situations 1.8 pts Above Average Does more than the obvious in terms of laying out people and relative positions; may overlook some ways that intersectionality deepens analysis of situation 1.6 pts Obvious Provides the obvious or expected analysis of the people and their relative positions 1.4 pts Less than expected A good start but fails to answer one or more of the questions 0.0 pts No Marks Included only the bare minimum, leaving many questions or facts out; didn′t include this element at all; or actually included incorrect information 2.0 pts This criterion is linked to a Learning Outcome Current Status How is this problem currently being addressed? 2.0 pts Full Marks Shows signs of research or deeper/broader thinking; goes beyond the obvious in many ways 1.8 pts Above Average Goes beyond the obvious by naming and discussing more than one clear method of response 1.8 pts As expected A typical response that meets assignment requirement but does not show effort at investigation or deeper thinking 1.6 pts Below Par Fails to fully answer the question or leaves some elements unstated 0.0 pts No Marks Included only the bare minimum, leaving many questions or facts out; didn′t include this element at all; or actually included incorrect information 2.0 pts This criterion is linked to a Learning Outcome Suggestions to Address What approach or strategies would you suggest to address the problem? Are these realistic and specific? 2.0 pts Full Marks Goes beyond obvious solutions, perhaps by including both structural and individual ways to address issue; is not only realistic and specific but perhaps includes specific steps or elements needed for implementation 1.8 pts Above Average Provides either more than a single obvious way to address situation or provides a more nuanced, deeper solution 1.6 pts Average Provides an obvious solution, likely focusing on individual solutions or on solutions that are general but potential workable 1.4 pts Needs Work Solution is too general or vague or is unrealistic without additional explanation 0.0 pts No Marks Included only the bare minimum, leaving many questions or facts out; didn′t include this element at all; or actually included incorrect information 2.0 pts This criterion is linked to a Learning Outcome Composition Is this well-written in terms of composition and punctuation/grammar? 1.0 pts Full Marks Well-written in terms of grammar and punctuation but also in terms of composition with a readable blend of simple, compound, and even compound-complex sentences. Virtually no spelling or grammar errors 0.9 pts Very Well Done Very well written with only a couple of small typos or punctuation errors. Readable composition with some sentences other than simple sentences. Complex and compound and complex-compound sentences are well-crafted although perhaps not perfect 0.8 pts Average A fine submission that one would expect from the majority of students; could use proof-reading to eliminate several typos or grammar issues and to introduce a bit more variety into the composition in terms of sentence style and word choices 0.7 pts Needs work More than a few issues with punctuation, grammar, spelling and appears to be ″dashed off″ rather than written and proofed 0.0 pts No Marks Significant number of punctuation, grammar, or composition issues to the point that reader has to work actively to understand the writing OR didn′t submit at all 1.0 pts Total Points: 10.0
