2.) What are the specific roles of their instructional leaders?

3.) What are the characteristics of the “Dynamic School?”

Sample:

1.) What are the habits and behaviors of highly effective urban teachers?

Successful urban teachers have “a cause beyond oneself” They view themselves as “part of the larger enterprise of the larger enterprise of complementing and working with each other to educate students (p. 43).” With this mindset, effective teachers are able to collaborate, continuously revise, and have instructional dialogue.

2.) What are the specific roles of their instructional leaders?
Within an effective or collegial school, there is a “SuperVision” of instruction. The text presents that instructional leadership should be viewed as “a function and process rather than a role or position. Therefore, there is no particular person as an instructional leader, “Educators throughout the school system- from the top to the bottom of its organizational chart- can engage in the function and process of supervision (p.10).” A leader must have the prerequisites of knowledge, interpersonal skills, and technical skills to facilitate instructional improvement. Some of the following are presented as roles for the instructional leader to complete or create:

1. Shared leadership with teachers

2. Respond to current teacher performance

3. Facilitation of teachers collaborating with each other in instructional improvement efforts

4. Linkage of instruction and classroom management with professional developmeny

5. Connection of school improvement and community development

3.) What are the characteristics of the “Dynamic School?”

The text presents that the characteristics of a dynamic school move away from the congenial (or friendly social interactions and professional isolation) and conventional school (dependency, hierarchy, and professional isolation) to collegial schools that, “establish learning goals for all students consistent with the responsibility of education in a democratic society (p.6).” Chapter three continues this vision of a democratic society as the authors present that; “A successful school is foremost an organization that defines good education for itself, through its goals and desired practices, and then engages in collective action to achieve that vision (p.38).”
Within these “Dynamic Schools” the following characteristics can be found:
1. Driven by a covenant of learning- mission, vision, and goals

2. A charter for schoolwide, democratic decision making; and collaboration

3. Authentic curriculum, instruction, and assessment

4. Critical study process for informing decisions and conducting action research (p.6)

5. Cultural responsiveness

6. Partnerships and networks
