THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE AND LEADERSHIP STYLE OF FEMALE ENTREPRENEURS IN THE UAE

Introduction-Recently, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have triumphed as a business leader in the Middle East (Fisk, 2008). In this respect, many questions have arisen regarding the impact of emotional intelligence in this success (Goleman, 1995). Studies conducted in UAE pertaining to business leadership revealed that emotional intelligence is directly related to the performance outcome (Goleman, 1998; Sala, Urch Druskat, and Mount, 2006). As described in the Six Second Emotional Intelligence Assessment (SEI) over 58% of the variation in the professional as well as personal success was attributed to factors like effectiveness, relationships, influence and career status amongst others (Zeidner, Matthews, & Roberts, 2009, Paludi, 2008). Women have not been left behind in the leadership of business in the UAE. According to the leaders of the Businesswomen Council in UAE women should rise to the occasion to work together with men in achieving progress and prosperity (Marturano, and Gosling, 2008).
Purpose –This study will evaluate and examine the relationship existing between emotional intelligence and leadership role of women entrepreneurs in UAE. This research will aim to assess the effect of emotional intelligence in order to determine whether it has effect in the leadership styles of women entreprenuers. The objectives of this research will be established in manner that they support the logical flow of the research. The literature of this will be instrumental in identifying the contemporary issues relating to emotional intelligence and leadership styles for women entreprenuers. This will assist in providing a clear guideline for this research by focusing on the influences, trends and factors applying to the two variables of the research study..
Methodology- This research will follow a deductive approach where qualitative and quantitative research methods will be used. This research will rely on both primary and secondary data. Primary data will be available from questionnaires whereas secondary data will be obtained from textbooks, journal or newspaper articles, and international sources like government sources, internet sources and websites. Primary data will be collected from various selected women entreprenuers through semi-structured interview and quantitative self-completion surveys. The semi-structured interviews will target the management personnel of the selected businesses. On the other hand, quantitative self-completion surveys will target both. Relative to the qualitative method, it will be used to overlook the outcomes of the research hypothesis and also to develop further study to test and support the research. In regards to the quantitative approach, Leadership Dimension Questionnaires (LDQ) will be the primary tool of research and it will be conducted through self administration. LDQs are most preferred in this research because they will eliminate biasness and partiality in data collection due to interviewer absence and questions delivery. However, the questionnaires require being more defined and precise before data collection. The design approach will be carried through an explanatory approach. Here, the variables involved in the research, emotional intelligence and women’s leadership styles will be related.
This research will utilize the original version of the leadership dimension questionnaire designed for testing a specific leadership model, Dulewicz and Higgs model. In addition a a standardized measurement instrument will be applied to all participants within the study (Dulewıcz, & HıggS, 2003; 2004).
The leadership dimension questionnaire will contain questions derived on two main constructs of the research; emotional intelligence and leadership styles. Relative to leadership styles, the leadership dimension questionnaire will assess the participants for the dominant leadership styles following the distinctive leadership styles by Dulewicz and Higgs (2003; 2004). These are engaging leadership (transformational) involving leadership (participative) and goal leadership (transactional) (Dulewıcz, & Hıggs, 2003; 2004).
Key Research Question- This will represent a short summary of the research questions. The challenge would be to relate the research questions with topics of emotional intelligence and leadership styles.
Findings- The findings obtained in the research will be examined, and appropriate conclusions drawn form the findings. Processing and analysis of the dada collected will employ use of statistical tools and software. Such software’s will enable input and coding of data in the correct layout where both the categorical and numerical data can be processed and presented using the appropriate formats like charts, tables, graphs and so forth. The level of significance of the statistical data collected will be explored. An interpretation of the statistical data will be provided so that a link can be created between the statistical data and the real life scenario.Rating scales like the likert scale will be used to rate the questions in order to obtain data of varied attributes depending the question statement. will An inference to the sample will be made so that the characteristics of the population can be developed into appropriate models. Comparison of primary and secondary data will be examined to identify the trends and relationship of the variables of research. this research will uphold accuracy and privacy of the data collected more so in collection of primary data.
Research limitations-
Like other self administered leadership dimension questionnaire surveys, this research by the problem related to the common methods variance (CMV). In order to control possible CMVs, a one factor test will be applied. This will ensure the results do not contain any single factor accounting for more than the acceptable limit of variance (>.5), thereby controlling the CMV limit.
The leadership dimension questionnaire will undergo rigorous tests to check for its accuracy (validity) and consistency (reliability). Dulewicz and Higgs (2003; 2004) publications will be referred to for wide analysis of the LDQs validity and reliability. Construct validity could also be demonstrated using pilot tests as well as the extensive mapping exercises. The validity and reliability of the data to be collected together with response rate will rely largely on the questions design, questionnaire structure and efforts applied in pilot testing. As far as data validity is concerned, the research questions must be carefully defined based on the literature reviewed, where appropriately discussions may be encouraged in the pilot phase. This will be directed to ensure the questionnaires cover the investigative research questions adequately to the extent that the questions will measure the constraints required deeply and appropriately. The extensive mapping approach is widely accepted and thus advocated for generating of a structured display of the concept at hand.
